About the Position

This position accepts the responsibility and accountability for the delivery of patient care during the cardiology patients’/families’ stay through the use of the nursing process. Directs patient/family education and delegates to ancillary personnel while maintaining professional nursing standards.  


II. ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY
? Reports to: Cath Lab Supervisor, Clinical Nurse Manager, and Cardiac Service line Director
? Supervises: None
? Key Working Relationships: CCL and PRU colleagues, Cath Lab Supervisor, Clincal Nurse Manager, Cardiologists, Cardiology Fellows, Physicians, and other department’s colleagues.
? Primary Customer Groups: Patients/families needing Cardiology diagnostic and interventional procedures and colleagues.

III. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
A. Assesses patient’s physical, psychosocial, environmental, spiritual, social and education needs.
B. Evaluates and documents patient/family responses to nursing interventions while working collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team to achieve desired patient care outcomes.
C. Guides and directs patient care activities to customize the above-indicated population by utilizing clinical/critical thinking skills.
D. Attends and participates in departmental/organizational meetings, inservices and educational opportunities.  
E. Serves as a steward for the hospital’s human and material resources. Meets productivity expectations of unit/department as defined by unit manager. Identifies/enters accurate charges. Utilizes and maintains appropriate supplies in department. Support staffing needs for patient care.  
F. Responsible for maintaining certification/licensure requirements as directed by position.  
G. Adapts positively to the ever-changing health care environment by supporting technology and process changes. Willing to learn new things is open to change and maintains a calm, positive manner under stressful conditions.
H. Provides competent patient care to the above indicated patient populations by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures and treatments.

L. Performs other responsibilities as requested by Cath Lab Supervisor, Clinical Nurse Manager and the Director of the Mercy Heart Center.

IV. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
A. Serving on house-wide committees
B. Serving on unit specific committees, promoting quality, patient care, nursing knowledge, development and professional growth.
C. Working in the Procedure Recovery Unit as delegated.
D. Provides Radiation protection according to prescribed standards.
E. Revenue reconciliation and charge error correction as specified by the department procedure supporting the hospital charging policy.

V. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
A. Education:
1. Graduate of a program in professional nursing
2. Current RN licensure in the state of Iowa.

B. Experience
1. Previous experience in acute care preferred.
C. Special Skills, Competencies, and Aptitudes
1. Ability to work flexible hours, including flexibility with daily starting and ending times.
2. Must have proficient computer skills.
3. Must provide proof of Basic Life Support (BLS Healthcare Provider, American Heart Association; or American Red Cross, via current card prior to employment or within 30 days of hire and maintains current status.
3. Completes Mandatory Reporting requirement within 6 months of hire and renews this requirement every 3 years.
4. Completes Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – American Heart Association within 30 days of hire and maintains current status.
5. Completion of Mercy Critical Care courses (ECCO), or an equivalent, is required in first year of hire or documentation of completion at MercyOne prior to transfer to department.
6. Ability to meet on-call requirements.
7. Must pass Cardiac Dysrhythmia exam on yearly basis to maintain competency
